Tell us a bit about the work UKATA currently does?

UK Asbestos Training Association (UKATA) set the standards in asbestos training and ensures that its members meet those standards. UKATA Members train in excess of 200,000 tradespeople each year. The Association actively promote asbestos awareness, to include the dangers of working with the substance and health threats associated.

Tell us about the history/background of the UKATA?
Since being established in 2008, UKATA has gone from strength to strength in the last 10 years, now numbering more than 180 member organisations from all corners of the UK.


What is the goal/goals of the organisation?

To maintain the prominent acclaim established within the asbestos industry and wider community whilst also continuing to uphold its internationally recognised high standards of training and welcome new members who meet these exacting standards. We want to continue to build the UKATA trademark for the supreme benefit of all its members by continuing to work within the guidelines of current legislation as an absolute minimum as well as being able to forge effective links with our trade partners and industry stakeholders.

Can you tell us a bit about UKATA’s speaking representatives at this year’s Contamination Expo Series?

Professor Roger Willey - The UKATA Director, Prof. Roger Willey is highly regarded as an expert witness acting in over 600 cases in Senior Law Courts for the last 20 years. Roger has Over 40 years’ experience of asbestos research, consultancy and training and has been involved in over 100 000 different asbestos related contracts. Roger works closely with HSE in the development of training packages to introduce new concepts following the introduction of Regulation 4 in the Asbestos regulations 2002. Roger has been involved in many of the important developments in the Asbestos Industry – from the early days before the Asbestos Licensing Regulations, up to today’s highly regulated frameworks. He received the IOSH President’s Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his services to Health & Safety 2014. In September 2016 Roger received the prestigious silver medal award from the royal environmental health institute of Scotland.

Chris Bishop - For over eighteen years, Chris has been working within the asbestos industry. Nearly a decade ago, Chris started his own asbestos consulting and training company which offers asbestos awareness, non-licensable and licensable asbestos training and site support, along with Duty to Manage and Asbestos Surveyor training courses. The company also works with clients in managing asbestos and provides consultancy support for remediation projects, including several with asbestos contaminated land.

Graham O’Mahony; UKATA Chair - Graham has worked in the asbestos industry for over 20 years and has worked as a building surveyor for the local authority, managing their asbestos issues. For over 25 years he has worked in the construction industry, his career starting as a gas engineer, then with being a building surveyor in the background. Graham has an extensive background in asbestos training and legislation, he is Chairman of The UK Asbestos Training Association who celebrate 10 years of excellence in 2018.
